Kalemie is the capital of the newly-created Tanganyika province which emerged following the DRC’s recent partition. Previously a part of the resource-rich great Katanga, the extraction of “blood minerals” such as cobalt, copper and diamonds often occurs amidst armed conflict and illegal mining. The province has seen a spike in intercommunal tensions and the presence of armed groups between 2013 and 2020, leading to internal displacement, with the Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) cluster identifying 8,960 households (23,013 individuals) displaced in Nyunzu and Kalemie as of April 2023, primarily due to conflicts between the Twa and Bantu communities and the resurgence of militias.
The ongoing violence has caused a high dropout rate among school-age children, increased vulnerability and widespread trauma. To address these issues, Let Africa Live is establishing a psychological support center and a professional training program in Kalemie, leveraging its two decades of experience in aiding young people to recover and build resilient futures.
